His Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburgh was President of City & Guilds for 60 years. On his retirement last year the Trustees of the City & Guilds Institute commissioned me to make a piece of furniture as a gift to thank His Royal Highness. A display cabinet for His Royal Highnesses parents’ orders and decorations was suggested and I designed this curved topped walnut and olivewood cabinet so that it could show both collections side by side, which now lives in his private library in Buckingham Palace.
Prior to making the cabinet I was lucky enough to met with His Royal Highness to discuss the design and wood selection. A dark wood was wanted and American Black Walnut was chosen, with contrasting olivewood for the inlays and the hand shaped feet. Sterling silver was used for the feet collars, City & Guilds lion emblem and plaque, whilst the hinges were silver plated.
Once the cabinet had been dressed with the medals by the Royal Collections team the cabinet was formally presented to His Royal Highness by Michael Howell, the Chairman of City & Guilds, at Buckingham Palace.
